How to Make Classic Creme Brulee: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creme brulee is a classic French dessert that consists of a rich custard base topped with a layer of caramelized sugar. It's a delicious and elegant dessert that's perfect for special occasions or any time you want to impress your guests. In this blog post, we'll walk you through the steps to make creme brulee at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 quart heavy cream
  • 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
  • 8 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sugar, plus extra for caramelizing

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).

  2. In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream and vanilla bean over medium heat until it starts to simmer. Remove from heat and set aside.

  3. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until they become a pale yellow mixture.

  4. Slowly pour the hot cream mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to combine. Be careful not to scramble the eggs.

  5. Once the mixture is fully combined, pour it through a fine-mesh strainer to remove any lumps or bits of vanilla bean.

  6. Divide the mixture evenly into 6-8 ramekins or custard cups. Place the ramekins into a large baking dish, then pour hot water into the dish until it reaches halfway up the sides of the ramekins.

  7. Carefully place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

  8. Remove the baking dish from the oven and allow the ramekins to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer the ramekins to the refrigerator and chill for at least 2 hours, or up to 2 days.

  9. When ready to serve, sprinkle a thin layer of sugar over the top of each custard. Use a kitchen torch to carefully melt and caramelize the sugar until it forms a crispy, golden crust.

  10. Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade creme brulee!

Making creme brulee may seem intimidating at first, but it's actually quite simple with the right recipe and tools. With these easy steps, you can create a decadent dessert that's sure to impress your guests.
